The drum brakes on most cars take a long time to wear, and some will never need to replace theirs. For those of us using our car in competitive racing, regularly creating lots of braking force and heat, I would like to share my install, bedding, and impressions.
Before you begin, be sure the e-brake is released. First you need to make a mental note how all of the parts are arranged. Start disassembly by releasing the top adjuster spring hooks on both shoes.
Next release the rear shoe by pushing in and turning the retaining spring assembly, then allow the shoe to swing down and disconnect the small bottom spring. The rear shoe can hang by the E-brake cable while you remove the front shoe retaining spring the same way, try not to lose any parts.
Wire brush the shoe contact points and spray the backing plate with brake clean. Apply grease to all contact points and then remove the adjuster stay spring assembly from the old front shoe and install it onto the new one.
Install the front shoe onto the backing plate by holding the pin tight with your fingers, then push and twist on the retaining spring.
Remove the rear shoe from the E-brake arm by using two small screwdrivers to separate the ends of the "C" clip until it slides off. Install the new rear shoe and squeeze the clip back together, making sure the arm wont come out of the shoe.
Disassemble the adjuster and clean and lubricate it, screw it in a bit further than it was then install it and clip the spring into the front shoe. Install the small spring on the bottom, then swing the rear shoe up into place and install the retaining spring. Clip in the adjuster spring to the rear shoe, then verify everything is seated properly.
Using a coarse sandpaper, scuff the surface of your drum to remove all of the old shoe material. Clean the drum with brake clean, grease the hub, then install the drum and adjust clearance until the shoes barely make contact when you spin the drum. Do the same to the other side, and prepare for the road test. First make sure you have normal brake pedal feel and the E-brake works, then study the bedding procedure and head out to perform.
After you finish the bedding procedure, the brakes will need to cool without being applied so use "Park" or leave the car in gear for a while.
